The pigeon tick Argas reflexus is a pathogen-transmitting soft tick that typically feeds on pigeons, but can also attack humans causing local and systemic reactions. Chemical control is made difficult due to environmental contamination and resistance development. As a result, there is much interest in increasing the role of other strategies like biological control. In this study, the efficacy of three strains (V245, 685 and 715C) of entomopathogenic fungus Metarhizium anisopliae for biological control of three life stages of pigeon tick A. reflexus including eggs, larvae, engorged and unfed adults was investigated under laboratory conditions. Five concentrations of different strains of M. anisopliae ranging from 10³ to 10(7) conidia/ml were used. All... |

The in vitro compatibility of the entomopathogenic fungus Beauveria bassiana (Bals.) Vuil. with 12 acaricide formulations was evaluated. The active ingredients Clorfenapyr, Fenpyroximate, Amitraz, Acrinathrin, Hexythiazox, Abamectin, Pyridine, Dimethoate, Pyridaphethion, Fenbutatin Oxide, Azocyclotin and Cyhexatin were tested in three different concentrations (mean concentration - MC, half MC and twice the MC). The formulations tested affected conidial germination, vegetative growth and sporulation of the fungus in different levels. The formulations more compatible with B. bassiana were Avermectin and the pyrethroids. The acaricides belonging to the organophosphate and organostanic chemical groups, however, drastically affected conidial germination as well... |

ABSTRACT This study aimed at evaluating the effect of the use of disinfectants and insecticides recommended for the control of pathogens and insects in poultry houses on the biological parameters of the entomopathogenic fungus Beauveria bassiana strain Unioeste 4. Disinfectants and insecticides were used at recommended concentration (RC), half the recommended concentration (0.5 RC), and twice there commended concentration (2RC). All treatments were sprayed on the fungus previously inoculated on PDA culture media. Germination, colony forming unit (CFU), vegetative growth and conidial yield were evaluated. Germination was the most affected parameter by insecticides, with reduction of up to 25% using Couro Limpo and Cypermil products. Cypermil also reduced... |

Foliage consumption by nymphs and adults of the grasshopper Rhammatocerus schistocercoides Rehn infected with the fungus Metarhizium flavoviride Gams & Rozsypal was evaluated. Sixth and eighth instar nymphs and female adults consumed on average (±SEM) 6.9 ± 0.36 cm² (60.7 ± 2.92 mg of dry matter), 11.0 ± 1.35 cm² (74.9 ± 9.24 mg d.m.), and 16.0 ± 0.50 cm² (126.5 ± 6.35 mg d.m.) of sugarcane leaves per day, equivalent to 85.4, 35.9 and 41.9% of the insect body weights, respectively. Eighth instar nymphs and female adults inoculated with M. flavoviride (5,000 conidia / insect) ingested less food from day three onward and showed at day 10 an average consumption 74.5 and 45.6% lower than control insects, respectively. Adult females topically treated... |

This research intended to investigate if the presence of pesticides in the soil could affect the pathogenicity of Metarhizium anisopliae Metsch. (Sorokin) for Ceratitis capitata (Wied.) and assess the effect of conidia application as suspension or dry conidia. The fungicides chlorothalonyl and tebuconazol, the acaricide abamectin, the insecticide trichlorfon, and the herbicide ametrin were applied at the manufacturer-recommended doses. Soil samples were placed in glass flasks and were given the fungus as conidial suspension or dry. After pesticide application, 20 3rd-instar larvae were placed in the soil. The flasks were sealed with voile fabric and incubated at 27 ± 0.5ºC for nine days, until adult emergence; incubation continued for four more days at... |

The genetic variability of 27 individuals from two distinct populations (Northeast and Central Brazil) of the grasshopper Schistocerca pallens (Thunberg) and eight isolates of its natural pathogen, the fungus Metarhizium flavoviride Gams & Rozsypal, was investigated using RAPD analysis. For the grasshoppers, ten different 10-mer oligonucleotide primers of arbitrary sequence were selected for analysis, resulting in 79 scorable binary characters. The program RAPDDIP applied to S. pallens revealed nucleotide diversity of 2.3 and 2.2% for the populations from Rio Grande do Norte (Northeast Brazil) and Federal District (Central Brazil), respectively. These values indicate the presence of high genetic variability within these populations. Conversely, the... |

This study investigated whether populations of naturally-occurring soil bacteria, fungi and actinomycetes influence the effect of fungicides on the survival and growth of Beauveria bassiana. The toxicity of methyl thiophanate, pyraclostrobin, mancozeb and copper oxychloride at the recommended doses was analyzed in culture medium and in soil inoculated with fungus at various time points after addition of fungicides. All fungicides completely inhibited the growth and sporulation of B. bassiana in the culture medium. The fungicides were less toxic in soil, emphasizing the action of the microbial populations, which interfered with the toxic effects of these products to the fungus. Actinomycetes had the greatest influence on the entomopathogen, inhibiting it or... |

The parasitoid Spalangia endius Walker is an efficient controller of Dipteran pupae, such as Musca domestica L. The entomopathogenic fungus Beauveria bassiana (Bals.) Vuil. is a regulator of insect populations, including these synanthropic pests. The aim of this work was to explore the possibilities of utilizing both agents in a combined form for the biocontrol of the domestic fly. Recently formed M. domestica pupae were inoculated by immersion in conidia suspension (10(8) conidia/ml) with two strains of B. bassiana (Bb6 and Bb10). The inoculated pupae were offered to the female parasitoid. In one bioassay they were offered pupae inoculated a single day and in other, pupae inoculated the following day as well. In both bioassays non inoculated (control)... |
